Color Line starts operating one of the largest hybrid ferry

On 1st of August 2019, the world's largest (according to shipping company information) plug-in hybrid ferry MS Color Hybrid was delivered by the Ulstein Verft to the operator Color Line. An important milestone in terms of innovative and environmentally friendly engine solutions for Color Line and the shipyard as well as for the entire maritime industry.

Green, intelligent and innovative, this is the MS Color Hybrid. In the future, the 160-meter-long and 27-meter-wide ferry will operate on the route Sandefjord-Strömstad and is able to carry up to 2.000 passengers and 500 cars.

The ferry is plug-in hybrid, that charges five-megawatt batteries of environmentally friendly electricity from shore power in Sandefjord, allowing it to travel quietly in and out of the fjord without emissions of harmful environmental gases, or nitrogen and sulfur compounds in the atmosphere. This reduces both emissions and noise. The battery weighs 65 tons and can be charged in one hour. The ship also has a heat storage of five megawatts, which uses the heat from lag and exhaust gas for heating. In combination with an optimal hull design, this helps to make the ship particularly energy efficient and environmentally friendly.

The R&M Group did the complete interior package of all public areas including the supply of galleys and provision stores for a total of 6.500 square meters. "We are delighted to have been able to contribute our part to this innovative and complex ferry with our expertise," so Ingebjørg Klausen Managing Director of R&M Norway. "We congratulate the project manager Odd Egil Sporsem and his team for the great project and thank Kimmo Hakkanen and his team from R&M Finland for the delivery and installation of the galleys and provision stores as well as for their outstanding support in the project phase.
